About Us

The San Antonio State Hospital (SASH) is an in-patient psychiatric hospital. We offer adult psychiatric services and forensic competency restoration. Our hospital is comprised of almost 700 employees and more than 200 patients. The current San Antonio State Hospital is being replaced by a brand-new, state-of-the-art hospital on the same campus, expected to open in April 2024.

SASH welcomes those who want to visit their loved ones and friends.

Hospital Visiting Hours

  • 4–7 p.m., Monday–Friday
  • 12–7 p.m., weekends and holidays

Visitation Guidelines

We can only release specific information about the patient's condition and progress after the patient has signed a disclosure of information form.

People who need special accommodation must contact the patient's social worker or the on-duty nurse.

If you're planning a visit with a child under 13, please contact the patient's treatment team or on-duty nurse to arrange for special accommodations. If approved, staff will arrange the location and accompany the patient.

Family Lodge

If you're visiting from out of town, you may be able to stay at the Family Lodge at no cost to you, courtesy of SASH and the Volunteer Services Council.

For more information or to schedule a stay, please contact the social worker assigned to your family member's care.

Volunteer Services Council

We're proud to work with the Volunteer Services Council of the San Antonio State Hospital to enhance patient care and make connections in the community. To learn more and volunteer, visit our Volunteer Services Council website.
