National Breastfeeding Month

Each August, Texas WIC promotes the value of breastfeeding for the health of women, infants and children by observing National Breastfeeding Month.

“Breastfeeding is important for the health of mothers and babies, and awareness is a critical first step in supporting mothers’ efforts to breastfeed,” said Lindsay Rodgers, associate commissioner for Early Family Nutrition and Development services. “That is why campaigns like National Breastfeeding Month are so important.”

During National Breastfeeding Month, many WIC clinics across the state host activities and celebrations to recognize the efforts of breastfeeding mothers. Activities honoring breastfeeding families and educating the public about the many benefits of breastmilk for infants and children include:

  • Community celebrations
  • Health fairs
  • Coloring contests for children
  • Receptions or baby showers for breastfeeding moms
  • Educational opportunities

Texas WIC also celebrates the following weeks throughout August. Celebrating these individual weeks will bring awareness to the achievements and unique challenges of the breastfeeding mothers in these communities:

Week 1: World Breastfeeding Week
Week 2: Indigenous Milk Medicine Week
Week 3: Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Breastfeeding Week
Week 4: Black Breastfeeding Week

Information about the benefits of breastfeeding and breastfeeding resources is available on BreastmilkCounts.com. Texas WIC also offers no-cost breastfeeding services at five Lactation Support Centers across the state and through the 24/7 Texas Lactation Support Hotline, 855-550-6667.
