Nursing home staff turnover is just one issue that has been shown to have a negative effect on the quality of life experienced by the residents in the home. In June 2014, AARP, The Commonwealth Fund, and The Scan Foundation released "Raising Expectations, 2014: A State Scorecard on Long-Term Services and Supports for Older Adults, People with Physical Disabilities, and Family Caregivers" which identified Texas as 49th in the country for quality of life and quality of care, with nursing home staff turnover being one factor of that rating. The nursing home staff turnover rate of 72 percent places Texas 50th in the country according to this report. Multiple studies show on-going training to direct care staff, including certified nurse aides, has a direct impact on the rate of turnover in a facility.

Texas Health and Human Services' Advanced Certified Nurse Aide: Building Blocks for Success is a free 2-day training. HHS will offer this training at locations across the state.

In this training, CNAs will learn advanced skills focused on caring for residents with challenging behaviors, intellectual and developmental disorders, mental illness, cognitive disorders such as dementia and complex medical issues, including those related to aging. To provide the best possible person-centered care and quality of life for residents, you will understand how to:

  • Effectively advocate for resident rights
  • Communicate and elevate resident care issues
  • Observe and identify physical, verbal and nonverbal cues
  • Manage time and work to avoid stress and burnout
  • Accurately provide hands-on assistance related to activities of daily living
