The Texas Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health Statistics and Engagement  can provide technical assistance in examining data by race/ethnicity and developing data-driven strategies using race equity principles and practices that result in improved outcomes for vulnerable populations.

  • Developing and recommending equitable policies and practices that address minority health, including education, juvenile justice, child welfare, workforce, and mental health systems.

Advancing Health Equity in Texas Through Culturally Responsive Care, CLAS Module (1.5 hours Online)

The OMHSE developed the CLAS online training to provide an understanding of the National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS).  The modules' aim is to improve health care quality and health equity in communities. The intended audience for this training is health care providers, such as physicians, nurses, social workers, community health workers, Promotoras and other professionals. The goal of this module is to improve cultural proficiency knowledge and skills of physicians and other health-care professionals with practical guidance about how to advance health equity by adopting and implementing the National CLAS Standards in Health and Health Care.

Advancing Health Equity:  A Blueprint for Implementation of the National CLAS Standards (2 hours)

The National CLAS Standards are intended to advance health equity, improve quality, and help to eliminate health care disparities for individuals, organizations, and communities. This presentation summarizes practical information on how to apply CLAS standards in your agency/organization or program. In this presentation, participants will gain knowledge on the key components of the 15 Standards as well as explore strategies for application. Participants will gain understanding of how to advance and sustain CLAS-related principles through policies and practices for improvement in agency's/program's planning and operation. 

Key areas of focus include the workforce, language assistance, and community engagement. Interactive exercises in the presentation enhance participants' knowledge, awareness, and sensitivity to improve cross-cultural interactions in health, healthcare, and other service organizations.

Courageous Conversations (4 hours)

In this introductory course, training participants will establish a common language to inform work to address racial disproportionality and disparities. Participants will examine the power of socialization and review local data for powerful evidence of racial inequities within our systems. Participants will

Life-Course Workshop:  A Path toward Equity (4 hours)

Minimum 15 – Maximum 30 participants

Using the CityMatCH Life Course Game as a framework for health equity this workshop leads participants through an interactive experience on the influence of systemic racial inequities on health and disease patterns across the life span. Participants will examine the impact of health disparities across populations over time and will be guided in developing develop strategies applicable to their communities and systems to transform policies and practices to improve improving overall outcomes for racial and ethnic minorities.

Evolution of Minority Health, Part I and Part II (3 hours)

This interactive timeline presentation reviews early attempts by government and civil rights groups to improve health outcomes for minority groups.  The presentation, covering a time period from the Declaration of Independence (1776) through the Heckler Report (1985), looks at health disparities and where we are today as a nation in advancing health equity.   

Health Equity 101 (2 hours)

In this introductory presentation, participants will establish a common language to explain equity and increase knowledge about disparities in their service area. This presentation provides concepts to help participants understand the multiple factors that influence health disparities. The guided discussion examines root causes of disparities to assist participants in identifying the social, economic, and environmental conditions that shape health outcomes. Participants will learn how to define, recognize, and identify the Social Determinants of Health and examine their impact on individuals, families and communities. Interactive exercises in the presentation increase participants' knowledge and awareness of key issues.

Mental Health First Aid - Curriculum for Adult | *Curriculum for Youth (8 hours)

Minimum 20 – Maximum 30 participants

Mental Health First Aid is a public education program that introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental illnesses, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common supports. This 8-hour course uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to offer initial help in a mental health crisis and connect persons to the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care. The program also teaches the common risk factors and warning signs of specific types of illnesses, like anxiety, depression, substance use, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and schizophrenia. * The curriculum for youth is intended for adults (ages 18+) who work with youth.

Poverty Simulation (4 hours)

Minimum 40 – Maximum 80 participants

This simulation provides participants with the opportunity to assume the role of a low-income family member helping to provide for your family and maintain your home on a limited budget. Participants will gain insight into the state of the poverty crisis in Texas that consumes so many individuals and families.  The poverty simulation is not a game, but rather an experience designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to see what those we serve experience every day.
