Gov. Greg Abbott appointed Charles Smith to be Texas' Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner, a job he started June 1, 2016. As Executive Commissioner, Smith oversees a system with around 43,000 employees that serves more than 7.5 million Texans every year in more than 600 programs ranging from Medicaid to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
A proud graduate of Texas Tech University, Commissioner Smith began his career as a volunteer in the Attorney General's Child Support Division in 1988. He rose to serve as the division's director as it became the top rated child support program in the nation.
