HHS officials, higher education partners and legislators received updates on a multiyear project to expand, renovate and replace inpatient psychiatric hospitals throughout the state.

The initial planning and construction phases of the project will cost approximately $300 million, which was approved by the 85th Texas Legislature for the 2018–2019 biennium.

Currently there are more than 700 people across Texas on wait lists to be placed in state hospitals. The project aims to meet that demand with upgraded, modern day facilities ideal for improved mental-health outcomes.

The master plan includes:

  • Renovation projects to expand capacity at the Kerrville and San Antonio state hospitals.
  • Planning and design of a new hospital and continuum of care campus in Houston.
  • Planning and design of two new 100-bed units at Rusk State Hospital.
  • Planning for the complete replacement of Austin and San Antonio state hospitals.
