If you’re interested in school health programs and school health issues, you might be interested in being a member of the Texas School Health Advisory Committee.

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission executive commissioner and the Texas Department of State Health Services’ commissioner will appoint members to the committee to serve a four-year term. Applications are due June 30.

DSHS will consider the applicants' qualifications, background and interest in serving on the committee. DSHS also tries to choose committee members who, as a whole, represent the diversity of all Texans. For that reason, DSHS considers applicants' ethnicity, gender and geographic location.

You may submit the application by email, mail or fax.

About the Texas School Health Advisory Committee

The purpose of the committee is to advise DSHS on the support for and delivery of coordinated school health programs and school health services. The committee will include key stakeholders as determined by the commissioner. The committee must include representatives of each of the following:

  • One representative of an organization or agency involved with the health of school children.
  • One school superintendent, school principal, or school district board.
  • One physician, physician’s assistant, or nurse practitioner (advanced practice registered nurse) who provides services to school-age children.

A Texas School Health Advisory Committee member must regularly participate in committee meetings and may also have to participate in subcommittee meetings, projects and presentations. Committee meetings will be held at least twice a year in Austin or at the call of the presiding officer. Committee members don’t receive compensation (a stipend) for participation on the committee but members in the parent category are entitled to reimbursement for travel expenses (related to mileage and/or airfare only).
