Several reports of a possible telephone scam have been made involving people identifying themselves as being from Texas Health and Human Services.
HHS urges people to protect themselves from phone scams by doing the following:
- If a caller says he or she is from a bank, insurance company or state agency and asks for personal information or money, do not provide it. Hang up immediately.
- If the call may have been legitimate, call the organization back using a number you trust. Do not use the number that you received the call from.
- Report suspected scams to local law enforcement, the organization the caller claimed to be from, or the Federal Trade Commission.
More information about phone scams and how to handle them can be found on the Federal Trade Commission website.
