The Richmond State Supported Living Center is celebrating the center’s 50 years of service this month and will be the focus of an April 17 Volunteer Services Council celebration and brunch event for elected officials to learn more about the staff’s work at the facility.
"This campus is a vibrant community where we help people develop the skills to pursue their dreams and live as independently as possible. As we move into the next 50 years, we will continue to get better," said Texas Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner Charles Smith. "Our dedicated employees are the backbone of this center and will continue to comfort, serve and care for our residents."
Opened April 15, 1968, on a 241-acre site located on the banks of the Brazos River and donated by The George Foundation, the Richmond SSLC provides 24-hour comprehensive health care and habilitation services to 324 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Other services include skills training; occupational, physical and speech therapies; and recreational care such as the services offered at the center’s Therapeutic Riding Center.
